A Carteret County businessman was convicted on Friday in Wake County District Court on tax charges filed by the North Carolina Department of Revenue.
Raymond Lawrence, Jr., 61, of 2340 Shore Drive, Morehead City, was found guilty on July 27, 2018 of four counts of Willful Failure to File Return, Supply Information, or Pay Tax.
Wake County District Court Judge Daniel J. Nagle sentenced Lawrence to two 45-day active prison terms for a total of 90 days in the Wake County Detention Center.
Information presented during trial showed Lawrence owned and operated 20th Street Grocery and Grill in Morehead City, earning taxable income from the business that required him to file North Carolina Individual Income Tax Returns for the tax years 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2014, but willfully failed to file the returns.
The charges against Lawrence resulted from an investigation by special agents with the Department’s Criminal Investigations Section in Raleigh and was prosecuted by the Special Prosecutions attorneys in the office of the Attorney General.
