NC Department of Revenue Offers Tax Relief for Those Affected by Guilford and Rockingham Tornados

Raleigh, NC
Apr 19, 2018

The North Carolina Department of Revenue announced today that Secretary Ronald G. Penny will use his statutory authority to offer tax filing relief for those affected by the April 15 tornados in Guilford and Rockingham Counties. The tax filing deadline for individual income taxes was midnight on April 18, 2018. The NCDOR will waive any penalties assessed against individuals or businesses located in the affected counties with respect to the failure to timely obtain a license, file a return, or pay a tax that was due on or before April 18, 2018 if the license is obtained, the return or an extension application is filed, or the tax is paid by May 18, 2018.

In light of the Internal Revenue Service extension from April 17 to April 18, NCDOR extended the tax deadline as well. State law prevents the NCDOR from waiving any interest in this situation.

Taxpayers who seek the extension must file a Penalty Waiver with the NCDOR. For information on the process, please review the notice.
