Clay County Attorney Charged in State Tax Case

A Brasstown attorney was arrested Tuesday on state tax charges filed by the North Carolina Department of Revenue.

Beverly Berniece Cook, 47, of 155 Hall Place Road, Brasstown, North Carolina, was charged on June 18, 2019 with three counts of Willful Failure to File Return, Supply Information, or Pay Tax.

Arrest warrants allege that Cook was required to file North Carolina Individual Income Tax Returns for tax years 2014, 2015, and 2016, but willfully failed to file the returns.  Cook is an attorney with the law firm Beverly B. Cook, PC, which is located in Murphy, NC.

Cook appeared before a Wake County magistrate and was placed under a 3,000.00 bond.  A first appearance is scheduled for July 22, 2019 in Wake County District Court in Raleigh.

The charges against Cook resulted from an investigation by special agents with the Department’s Criminal Investigation Division in Raleigh.
