Guilford County Couple Charged in State Tax Case

A Guilford County couple were arrested separately this week on felony tax charges filed by the North Carolina Department of Revenue.

Moses Singleton, III, 41, of 3156 Cranberry Ridge Drive, High Point was charged on March 5, 2018 with five counts of Embezzlement of State Property and two counts of Failure to File North Carolina Corporation Income Tax Returns. Gwendolyn Denise Singleton, 47, of 3156 Cranberry Ridge Drive, High Point was charged on March 6, 2018 with five counts of Embezzlement of State Property.

Arrest warrants allege that Moses Singleton, III, President of Singleton Care, Inc., and Gwendolyn Denise Singleton, Executive Director of Singleton Care, Inc., assisted, or aided and abetted the corporation to embezzle, misapply, and convert to its own use $50,162.38 in North Carolina Withholding Tax during the period January 1, 2012 through January 31, 2017. During this period of time, Moses and Gwendolyn Singleton were responsible persons of Singleton Care, Inc., and were under a duty to collect, hold in trust, and remit North Carolina Withholding Tax to the North Carolina Department of Revenue. 

Moses Singleton, III appeared before a Guilford County magistrate and was placed under a $70,000 bond. Gwendolyn Denise Singleton appeared before a Guilford County magistrate and was placed under a $10,000 bond. A first appearance for both is scheduled for April 18, 2018 in Wake County District Court in Raleigh.

The charges against the Singletons resulted from an investigation by special agents with the Department’s Criminal Investigations Section in Raleigh.
