Two Wilmington Attorneys Plead Guilty to State Tax Charges

RALEIGH – Two Wilmington Attorneys pleaded guilty Wednesday in Wake County District Court to tax charges filed by the North Carolina Department of Revenue.

Clay Allen Collier, 56, of 1033 Robert E. Lee Dr., and Andrew John Hanley, 53, of 31 Robert E. Lee Dr., Wilmington, pleaded guilty on February 22, 2017 to Willful Failure to File North Carolina Individual Income Tax Returns.

Wake County District Court Judge William C. Lawton sentenced Collier and Hanley to 45-day prison terms. The sentences were suspended and they were both placed on unsupervised probation for 18 months. Both men were ordered to serve 100 hours of community service. Collier was further ordered to pay a criminal fine of $700, and Hanley was ordered to pay a $1,500 criminal fine. Collier and Hanley filed returns and paid restitution prior to court.

Information presented in court showed that Collier and Hanley, are North Carolina licensed attorneys with the law firm of Crossley, McIntosh, Collier, Hanley & Edes, PLLC, located in Wilmington. Collier willfully failed to file North Carolina Individual Income Tax Returns for the tax years 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013, and 2014. Hanley willfully failed to file North Carolina Individual Income Tax Returns for the tax years 2009, 2010, and 2012.

The charges against Collier and Hanley resulted from an investigation by a special agent with the Department’s Criminal Investigations Section in Raleigh.
