RALEIGH – A Wake County businesswoman pleaded guilty Tuesday in Wake County Superior Court to felony charges filed by the North Carolina Department of Revenue.
Anh Van Shepard, 50, of 12132 Pawleys Mill Circle., Raleigh, pleaded guilty on January 10, 2017 to four counts of Embezzlement of State Property.
Superior Court Judge Donald W. Stephens sentenced Shepard to a 16-month minimum, 29-month maximum prison term. The sentence was suspended and Shepard was placed under electronic home monitoring for 90 days. Shephard was also placed on supervised probation for 36 months, ordered to pay a $15,000 criminal fine and complete 100 hours of community service work within six months. Shepard paid $75,000 in restitution prior to the plea.
Information presented in court showed that Shepard, owner of Chique Prom, a dress shop located at Triangle Town Center Mall, Raleigh, embezzled, misapplied, and converted to her own use $74,673.81 in North Carolina and Wake County sales tax during the period January 1, 2011 through December 31, 2014. During this period of time, Shepard was the owner and responsible person of Chique Prom, and was under a duty to collect, hold in trust, and remit North Carolina State Taxes to the North Carolina Department of Revenue.
The charges against Shepard resulted from an investigation by a special agent with the Department’s Criminal Investigations Section in Raleigh.
