Raleigh

RALEIGH – A Rocky Mount tax preparer pleaded guilty Thursday in Wake County District Court to tax charges filed by the North Carolina Department of Revenue.

Myesha Harrington Moore, 37, of 850 Bridle Drive, Rocky Mount, pleaded guilty on July 10, 2014 to seven counts of Willful Failure to Truthfully Account for Taxes.

Wake County District Court Judge Robert Rader sentenced Moore to a consolidated prison term of 45 days. The sentence was suspended and Moore was placed on probation for 36 months. Moore was also ordered to pay restitution of $19,552.71, perform 100 hours of community service and pay a $3,500 fine. Moore was further ordered not to engage in the preparation of tax returns for others for the duration of her probation.

An investigation by a special agent with the North Carolina Department of Revenue found that Moore prepared North Carolina Individual Income Tax Returns for clients for the tax years 2010 and 2011, claiming false credits and deductions such as dependent information and charitable contributions that could not be substantiated. The false credits and deductions resulted in the issuance of larger refunds.

The charges against Moore resulted from an investigation by a special agent with the Department’s Criminal Investigations Section in Raleigh.
