RALEIGH – A Lillington woman pleaded guilty Thursday in Wake County District Court to felony charges filed by the North Carolina Department of Revenue.
Tamika Lynnette Goins, 29, of 11 Sheldon Ct., Lillington, pleaded guilty on March 27, 2014 to four counts of Obtaining Property by False Pretenses and four counts of Uttering a Forged Instrument.
District Court Judge Robert B. Rader sentenced Goins to a six-month minimum, eight-month maximum prison term. The sentence was suspended and Goins was placed on supervised probation for 36 months. She was ordered to pay restitution of $2,079.74, pay a fine of $1,000, and perform 50 hours of community service.
Information presented in court showed that Goins filed false North Carolina Individual Income Tax returns for the tax years 2006 and 2007 representing that she had North Carolina income taxes withheld from her wages different than the amount reported by her employer. For tax years 2008 and 2009 returns were filed representing that she was employed by a local business and had North Carolina income taxes withheld from her wages, when in fact she was not employed by the business and did not have the taxes withheld by the company. The returns caused the state to give her credit for payment of individual income tax withholdings that she was not entitled to receive. In addition, Goins was charged with four counts of Uttering a Forged Instrument in the form of false Wage and Tax Statements, for the same years.
The charges against Goins resulted from an investigation by a special agent with the Department’s Criminal Investigations Section in Raleigh.
