Update on Recent Sales and Use Tax E-Mail


On February 2, 2016, the North Carolina Department of Revenue (NCDOR) sent an e-mail regarding changes for the sale or renewal of a service contract for tangible personal property. This e-mail was distributed to taxpayers that file quarterly sales and use tax returns electronically.

The message was intended and authentic. However, due to an incorrect technical setting, taxpayers may have received messages beginning February 4, 2016, from other recipients included in the distribution. Typically, the e-mails do not allow for such responses, but due to the technical setting, a small number of these responses were sent to the entire community.

The NCDOR is working immediately to address the issue and apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. We will also be sending a follow-up e-mail to the affected recipients clarifying the error.
