Join Our College Internship Program

College students can "learn and earn" in NCDOR's College Internship Program, which offers paid, part-time positions to students in the fields of Accounting/Auditing, Business, Economics, Communications, Graphic Arts, Criminal Investigations, and Process Improvement. Participants will get real work experience and learn about future career opportunities both at the NCDOR and in other state government agencies. Positions are available throughout the state periodically during fall, winter, spring, and summer sessions as needed by the agency.

Audit Internship (one position based in Raleigh)

May 22 – July 28, 2023

Examination Division (specific locations: Raleigh)

Required Majors: Accounting, Business (or Business related); an Accounting minor is required for non-Accounting majors

Skills: familiar with accounting practices and principles, as well as Microsoft Excel and Word software. 

Duties (duties will vary based on unit assigned): assist with mailings, filings, scanning, and organization of audit documentation; work in DOR databases to log, track, and perform data analysis; shadow auditors during taxpayer interviews, both live and virtual; review and analyze financial records; assess tax returns for accuracy and tax compliance; review past audits to help determine potential audit candidates.

Communications Internship

June - December 2023, $17 per hour

Public Affairs

Suggested Majors: Communications, Journalism, Web Design, Liberal Arts

Skills: at least 2 years of creative writing and journalistic practices; possess research experience and critical thinking skills; pays attention to detail; can meet deadlines; can work and generate ideas independently. Must be able to provide own internet service. Photography is a plus.

Duties: writing articles for the agency website, intranet, and agency newsletter; assisting with information review and updating articles on the website; reviewing and revising content for a redesigned intranet as part of the transition process. May also include writing news releases, social media posts, and some photography.

 

Criminal Investigations Internship (based in Raleigh)

May 22 – July 28, 2023

Criminal Investigations Division

Required Majors: None, but Accounting/Business/Economics majors preferred

Skills: familiar with Microsoft Excel and Word software, excellent verbal and written communication skills, ability to work independently or in a team environment. 

Duties: perform support functions necessary to assist Special Agents in their investigations, to include analyzing financial reports and reviewing tax documents.

Graphics Internship

June – December 2023, $17 per hour

Public Affairs

Suggested Majors: Graphic Arts, Computer Graphics, Communications, Liberal Arts, Graphic Design, Computer Animation

Skills: at least 3 years of graphic art design. Creative designer with an understanding of the impact of color palettes on human psychology and emotion; has a proven understanding of proportion and balance in design layout; understands the importance of contrast and image placement; pays attention to detail. Must be skilled with Adobe InDesign and other graphics programs. Must be able to provide own internet service.

Duties: helping to tell the NCDOR story using impactful graphics that will inform, educate, and influence opinions and outcomes; creating still and motion graphics for a variety of uses; develop a variety of templates for fliers and digital communications; develop graphics for social media and for video productions.

Process Improvement Internship (based in Raleigh, or virtual)

May 22 – July 28, 2023, $17 per hour

Required Majors: None, but Business Management, Business Administration, Accounting, Computer Science, Data Analytics, Engineering majors preferred

Skills: strong written, verbal, and critical thinking, and facilitation skills. Skilled in collecting, analyzing and evaluating data. Ability to work collaboratively. Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Excel.

Duties: assist with process improvement projects, potentially leading a small scope project that may include proposed process changes. Create and/or edit website content, and analyze current data collection and reporting methods and provide suggestions for improvement with the potential to implement changes.
