Join Our College Internship Program

College students can "learn and earn" in NCDOR's College Internship Program, which offers paid, part-time positions to students in the fields of Accounting/Auditing, Business, Economics, Communications, Graphic Arts, Criminal Investigations, and Process Improvement. Participants will get real work experience and learn about future career opportunities both at the NCDOR and in other state government agencies. Positions are available throughout the state periodically during fall, winter, spring, and summer sessions as needed by the agency.

Access and Identity Management Analyst Intern, one hybrid position based in Raleigh

May 20 - July 26, 2024

IT Service Operations

Preferred Majors: Information Technology majors

Skills: Computer skills including Microsoft Excel; IT systems experience such as Active Directory; excellent analytical skills; mainframe experience a plus. 

Duties: assist with the revamping of access request forms and new hire templates; redesign the forms to include all access mappings.

Field Audit Internship (two positions, hybrid and required to report to assigned office as needed; two additional positions, hybrid and required to report to either Raleigh or Rocky Mount offices as needed)

Examination Division 

Accepted Majors: Business Administration, Economics, Accounting or related field (Administrative Science, Business Law, Business Management, Business Operations, Finance, Financial Management, Public Administration, Public Sector & Government Administration Management, Tax, Tax Law and Trust & Wealth Management)

Skills: strong analytical and quantitative skills; ability to communicate ideas and findings clearly and effectively; ability to work well in teams and independently; applicants must carry a 2.5 or greater overall grade point average on a 4.0 scale; applicants must be willing and able to work part-time or full-time for the entire 10-week internship.

Duties (duties will vary based on unit assigned): assist with mailings, filings, scanning, and organization of audit documentation; work in DOR databases to log, track, and perform data analysis; shadow auditors during taxpayer interviews, both live and virtual; review financial records received during the audit process; analyze records for accuracty.

Communications Intern (Podcasting)

January - December 2024, $17 per hour

Public Affairs

Suggested Majors: Communications, Journalism, Video/Audio Production, Liberal Arts

Skills: creating and producing podcasts (to include experience with audio equipment and editing software); research experience and critical thinking skills; attention to detail; can meet deadlines; can work and generate ideas independently. Must be able to provide own internet service. Writing and photography are a plus.

Duties: assisting the Public Affairs team with creating a regular podcast focusing on taxpayer education and other topics for the public (will include design of the show, selection and use of editing software; and selecting appropriate channels for distribution). Intern may also write articles for the agency website, intranet, and agency newsletter; writing news releases, social media posts, and some photography.

 

Corporate Tax Administration Intern, one hybrid position based in Raleigh

Preferred Majors: Finance, Economics, Accounting, Business Administration, Public Administration, Pre-Law

Skills: excellent written and oral communication skills; proficiency in Microsoft Windows, including Microsoft Office and Teams; skilled in research and written analysis.

Duties: assisting in publishing tax forms, bulletins, annual tax law updates, and important notices; reviewing tax legislation introduced in the General Assembly; reviewing educational information for the benefit of NCDOR employees and for use by taxpayers and tax professionals.

Criminal Investigations Internship (based in Raleigh)

May 20 – July 26, 2024

Criminal Investigations Division

Accepted Majors: Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, Economics or Criminal Justice

Skills: basic knowledge of financial practices and/or generally accepted accounting principles; demonstrated experience with Microsoft Office software applications to include Word and Excel; effective verbal and written communications; organizational and time management; effective research and analytical skills.

Duties: assist Special Agents in their case work to further their investigations, to include case research, calculating tax due, bank analysis, scanning case documents, and data entry; actively participate in training related to tax systems, databases, professional communication, etc.; attend informational meetings, tours, and presentations as requested; shadow and participate in Criminal Investigations activities; develop and give a presentation regarding internship.

Electronic Communications Intern, one position based in Raleigh

May 20 - July 26, 2024

Excise Tax Division

Preferred Majors: Communications and Media, Information Systems, Business Administration, Data Analytics, Math, Statistics, Computer Science

Skills: effective communications, Excel software, and reporting/data generation. Candidates should also be detail oriented, effective at multitasking, and fast learners.

Duties: collecting email addresses and cell phone numbers for electronic communication with Excise Tax taxpayers. Tasks include but are not limited to:

  1. Review current processes of collecting email addresses and cell phone numbers and offer suggestions\updates to improve them. 
  2. Collect new email addresses and review existing ones, clean up the email addresses and cell numbers, and create a central repository for them in an Excel spreadsheet or Access database.
  3. Update Granicus with the new email addresses and cell phone numbers.
  4. Generate reports for management as needed.

Manage the web requests from the Motor Carrier site and the Update Contact Information for all Excise taxpayers. Tasks include but are not limited to:

  1. Review current email requests from taxpayers and respond to them timely and accurately.
  2. Create canned responses to common taxpayer questions that will be used for training.
  3. Update applicable systems with correct demographic information 

 

January - August 2024

Public Affairs Division

Suggested Majors: Graphic arts, Computer graphics, Communications, Liberal Arts, Graphic design, Computer animation

Skills: at least 3 years of graphic art design. Creative designer with an understanding of the impact of color palettes on human psychology and emotion; has a proven understanding of proportion and balance in design layout; understands the importance of contrast and image placement; pays attention to detail. Must be skilled with Adobe InDesign and other graphics programs. Must be able to provide own internet service.

Duties: helping to tell the NCDOR story using impactful graphics that will inform, educate, and influence opinions and outcomes; creating still and motion graphics for a variety of uses; develop a variety of templates for fliers and digital communications; develop graphics for social media and for video productions. 

Motor Fuels Tax Auditor Intern, two positions, one based in Raleigh and one based in Greensboro

Preferred Majors: Accounting, Business Administration

Skills: interact effectively with taxpayers and their representatives to communicate examination findings, basis for conclusions reached, including complex interpretations of tax law, administrative code, and divisions’ technical advice memorandums and directives is required; interact with staff members; deal effectively with people in a positive manner; proficient in operating a personal computer and learning to use required software; proficient with Microsoft Access, Word and Excel as well as NCDOR's mileage and audit system; able to understand and use the NCDOR's mainframe systems including web-based applications; possess adequate skills in researching multiple websites and computer databases for pertinent information.

Duties: conduct independent examinations of financial and operational records of taxpayers that are not in voluntary compliance and have unique or special audit features or anticipated accounting, tax law, or investigative problems; specific responsibilities and duties include audit selection, examination, report preparations/exit conference/audit follow-up, interaction with other departmental personnel, public assistance/taxpayer education, and special projects. This position conducts Motor Fuels, IFTA and IRP audits.

Skills: collecting, analyzing, and evaluating data; strong written and verbal communications skills; strong critical thinking ability.

Duties: helping with process improvement projects, potentially leading a small-scope project which would include facilitating discussions with employees from various areas of the agency to propose process changes. Assist with creating, reviewing, and/or editing website content and other instructions or documentation provided to taxpayers and the public. 

Property Tax Intern, one hybrid position based in Raleigh

May 20 - July 26, 2024

Local Government Division

Preferred Majors: law students are preferred

Skills: reading legal decisions and understanding the findings; distinguishing key words from these cases/decisions so that we can flag for keyword searches; basic computer skills to navigate files, and basic data entry to enter information into a database; effective communication skills to work with our staff to learn more about what our finished product should look like.

Duties: reviewing multiple Property Tax Commission decisions as well as Court of Appeals cases to help develop a searchable database that can find cases based on key words; identifying the key issues with the cases; determining key words/terms that can be searched. The applicant will also assist leadership and our IT developer to develop the functionality of the database. Once the database is fully developed, the applicant will complete the database by making sure all data has been entered properly, and present the final product to leadership team from our division. 

Sales and Use Tax Administration Intern, one hybrid position based in Raleigh

May 20 - July 26, 2024

Taxpayer Assistance & Collections Intern, 11 positions based at NCDOR offices statewide

May 20 - July 26, 2024

Taxpayer Assistance & Collections Division

Preferred Majors: Accounting, Business Management, Business Administration

Skills: customer service (particularly the ability to remain calm in potentially confrontational situations); research; and verbal and written communications. Candidates must also have strong organizational and time management skills.

Duties: assisting walk-in taxpayers in a professional manner; communicate with taxpayers either on the telephone or through written correspondence; participate in training related to tax systems, tax schedules, professional communication, etc.; research delinquent taxpayers to determine if they are obligated to file returns for all tax schedules; assist with special projects or duties assigned by office or division management.
